About Mites.

Mites live in the bedding, nesting boxes, under perches, under timber bits of wood or any dark hiding place they can find. They dont live on the hen. They come out at night, go along perches, up hens legs & suck the blood out of the birds. Mites live on Blood. (Lice live on dry skin & dust around vent of hen.)

Mites are very difficult to see or find until it it is getting too late for your hens. So prevention is better than cure. Dont wait to treat, treat in early Summer.

HOW TO TREAT &

HELP PREVENT

MITES

using Exzolt

leave hens with out water for approx 12 hrs best at night. Put Ezxolt into enough water for the day. If hens free range leave locked in. Make sure they drink it all. May need to give a little more water if very hot. It does not have a taste, which means all hens will drink it.

 Repeat in 7 days. Check coops for mites. Then clean coop out. Follow up with the cleaning and spraying suggested below.

Dose rate 0.05ml per 1 kg of live weight

Some Facts about Mites

Please keep in mind this is my way of coping with Mites there are many lines of thought. I find this works very well

Followed by 2  treatments of Exzolt a year.

Treat approx Nov /Dec again in May/ June

Some important factors about mites;

What you need :  To treat for 7-10days. Diesel, Ag lime, Sulphur Powder DE.  High presure hose or water Blaster.

If you have hens you will have mites. They are so small and live in the cracks in the timber or joins & folds of Plastic coops. Also in the joins of Iron. Any minute spot they can find.

They can lay dormant for months maybe  years in an old coop or shed. Also in old hay, wood chips etc.

What are mites? Do a search on the net. We have Mites & Lice. Lice live on hens. Mites live in house. Go up legs of hens at night to suck their blood. This is why Poultry will have pale face Because they are anaemic. Mites are Blackish but if you squash them they will be full of blood

Please keep in mind this is my way of coping with them & there are many lines of thoughts out there.

Once you get a programe under way you should be able to keep on top of them. I find that once you have used Diesel on going you only need to retreat all of coop  once a year. I do a lot of spot Pouring. I keep a bottle at hand all the time

What to do;

First step is to remove everything from the coop. Hens can go back in once finished.

This is bedding floor material. Perches if you can loose bit of timber etc. Anything that will come out. Burn old bedding. Wash with hose and scrub anything else taken out let dry then pour Diesel onto it.

Hose out, or water blast if you can. Let dry.

With a bottle with a hole drilled in the top of the bottle Pour Diesel all over the house. Inside and down cracks on the outside. Make the timber very wet. If your house has Iron Pour it into Joins. Same with Plastic houses. After a couple of hours let the hens back in. Put new bedding and a little floor covering. DONOT USE POWDER THAT DAY in coop but only nesting boxes.

Next day Do Diesel again! Do floor with a coating of Ag Lime. Put more Hay/ straw/saw Dust ( what ever you use) onto floor. Put another coating of ag lime on top.

Mix DE & Sulphur Plus lime 1/3 of each. Put into all corners in a pile same in nesting boxes. Dust all over nesting box. Make a goo pile at end of perches after you have dieseled perches.

Put dusting powder on to all hens vent areas. Drench each one with a pour on wormer. Do legs and faces with Rawleighs Salve Rubbing in well. Watch eyes. Repeat every 2 day if scaly.

After 2 day do diesel again in areas you can. Check powder on the ends of perches for dead mites as well as corners. Put more powder. Repeat again in 2 days..

If this has not worked start again! I have had coops that I have removed and Hosed 2-3 times in one day then diesel 3-4 time the day after. Especially if they are under the house.

Other have used Neem oil. Ripcord. Engine waste Oil. Whatever you use soak the house well Not just a thin spray from Garden spray.

If you use DE on its own it is best used made into a paste & paint it on.

One House I had to do this to has lasted 2yrs before any sign of Mites. If you want any more advice just ask.

The treatment needs to be ongoing. I have bottles full of diesel, plus powder ready all the time. I do nesting boxes & Perches regularly with both. No need to clean the house out every time.

Please Note:

Ivermectin-based drench is for Worms & Mites .5 ml on the back of the neck 14 days with holding on eggs. Best to do twice when not laying. $1 per hen 2 doses.

Since I have been using Exzot I find the lice problem is a lot less.

Distruct is used near the vent for Lice. no withholding. $1 per hen x 2 dose 14 days apart.

If you want to change to Flubonal instead of Ivermectin that is fine, a good idea to use the Pour on when hens are not laying as a 14-day withholding on eggs.

Stressol is a multivitamin. 1/4 teaspoon in ltr water for many things, they like it.
